To create a dining room that conversation is full and plenty, there are many tricks of the trade. As always , colour plays a very important part.  As my client wanted something different, I decided to mix up the chairs, so we have 2 red (deluxe vermilion, satin wood) 4 (manilla colour trend) and 2 in oak, this will funk up the space and allow for a more casual ambience.

The big change I think is the Orla Kiely wallpaper, it’s a lovely shade of mustard. Because this is such a small space the wallpaper adds, texture, colour and depth to the room, giving it a very striking and individual look. An accent colour of red has been introduced in the 2 red chairs and hydrangea on the table.

Seat cushions got in Dunnes Stores.

Cream central pendant light over table got in Design Options Portlaoise, they have a great selection lighting at very affordable prices. There’s nothing as important as a central light over a table, whether it be a chandelier or pendant, its gives the dining area a real presence. The 2 carver chairs in solid oak were also got in Design Options, where they have a beautiful Interior Design shop, and very helpful staff.

Wallpaper installed by Paul O’Brien, O’Brien Brothers, Durrow. Tel. (086 8177152). If you want a professional look then you really have to get a professional, and I think Paul did an exceptional job. Orla Kiely Wall paper was got in Albany Interiors, Portlaoise.

My client already had these wall candle holders, so I got them painted (dulux, Swedish  white) this makes them stand out from the wallpaper. Great care is needed when adding art work to wallpaper, a very fussy and decorative wallpaper can be over powering if to many pictures and wall objects  are added. Just remember wallpaper is a form of art, and needs very little to be enjoyed.

What is it with me and mirrors, just obsessed with them. Every dining room should have a large mirror, it not only bounces the light from windows but also gives the illusion of more space and more diners. This mirror was got in an Interior Design shop in Portarlington called Parklane Interiors, a fabulous little treasure trove for the Interior Design seeker, and wow what value.

This flower arrangement cost €19, hydrangea from Dunnes Stores and vase from TK MAXX, as I have said before you don’t have to spend a fortune to get an elegant and sophisticated look. The extending oak table is from Minogue furniture, Roscrea.

It’s important to coordinate the living space and kitchen, cushions are from TK MAXX.

The deer head got in TK MAXX adds a little quirkiness to the over all scheme. This wall is painted in a mixed colour from dulux, it leads to a utility so would not be practical to wallpaper. The colour I picked complements the wallpaper, it is also used on arch over window, as it is very difficult to paper a round surface especially with designed wallpaper.

And now it’s time to entertain, I hope I’m invited back here for tea.

Now you can see how a dull and dark north facing room can be transformed into a bright, colourful and cosy space. The room now looks like it has purpose and personality.
